Costum and Advent

Customs, associated traditions and the pride of the miners have been determining life in the Erzberg region of Styria for many centuries and today define its unmistakeable origin and identity.

The St Barbara celebration is a festivity celebrated by all which centres around St Barbara (patron saint of miners) and takes place from the end of November to December, featuring a range of colourful and authentic events to celebrate the custom: from the Ledersprung ceremony and last shift before Christmas to the St Barbara market and the mining procession.

Barbara beer from Göss is also specially brewed for the occasion and is available exclusively from the region’s inns and pubs during this period. The biggest Advent village in Upper Styria is located just a 30 minute drive from the discovery region during Advent in Leoben. It is open into the evening.
