The Erzbergbahn railway opened in 1891 as a cog railway and was operated this way until 1978 using steam locomotives. It is renowned for being one of the most beautiful stretches of track in Europe. It is also the steepest adhesion railway with a standard gauge in the European Union, lending it a magical power of attraction and making it a hot candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage title, along with the Erzberg.

The route is unique: the train winds its way over 8 walled viaducts of up to 32 m high and 117 m long and through 5 tunnels with a total length of 2.5 km with gradients of up to 71‰ from the Vordernberg and via Präbichl to Eisenerz. Unimaginable views of the Styrian Erzberg, the Eisenerz Alps and the Northern Kalkalpen Alps can be enjoyed from the rail-bus.
